the characters

  • THE missing GIRL.

Mashudu Molepo powerfully portrays Bronwin Brown, who lives with an abusive stepfather and a trophy mum, ensuring she never lacks undeserved attention. Her ordeal is contrasted with Grant’s story. How can he care about something so trivial as his abusive relationship when, right under his nose, Bronwin goes missing, presumably dead? It affects both his life and Bronwin’s family, and perhaps the entire town.

  • The misunderstood man

Caylin Benting portrays Grant with a delicate nuance of a young man experiencing a breakup with a girl he scarcely knows and, for the first time as an adult, viewing life differently. He is compelled to make a difficult decision that will alter the course of his relationship forever, just as the case of the missing girl is resolved.

  • The mentor

The mentor, a former convict who has lost faith, searches for Bronwin, but his spirit is burdened because something terrible has happened to another child. He feels his community has failed to help its kids. He attempts to help Grant as well, but that also seems to be unsuccessful, as something terrible has happened to yet another child, and he feels his community has been unable to do anything to help the children. He tries to assist Grant, but it doesn’t seem to work either.

  • The Toxic Girlfriend

Living independently, Stephanie Sandows portrays Genie, the toxic girlfriend, prompting Grant to reevaluate her relationship goals: is this meant to last or just for the moment? Living independently continues to be challenging. Accustomed to being “the catch" and constantly pursued by boys, she finds it difficult to decide when to stand her ground. It remains just as complex, used to being “the catch" and never short of boys chasing her, she struggles with knowing when to pick her battles.

Watch it now

The story is layered, complex and subtle. It plays effectively into some genre tropes, such as mystery and suspense, about the missing girl, when in fact the story is actually about human relationships and is indeed a coming-of-age story.
